Finished watching Chabrol's Madam Bovary (1991) last night. Terrific black-bile-vomiting death scene from Huppert.

&, especially, as the cook in ‘babette’s feast’, in which she was active in service to others rather than passive to societal expectation.

'i'm on the left because i'm not on the right. it's that simple.'
/#history: in 'the eye of vichy', self-proclaimed marxist, claude chabrol (born in 1930), made a film whose purpose was - perhaps, with more than a hint of clin d'oeil - to show how humans can easily be influenced (brainwashed, even) by images. this, to me, is emblematic of chabrol's magic as a filmmaker.

it would be both convenient & easy to categorise him as a maven of mainstream 'polar'; but there's always so much more to his stories. even the most reprehensible of his characters somehow elicits at least a moment of pity or understanding. it's a thread that runs through damned near every one of his 60-strong body of work - & you'll often find it intertwined with a healthy dollop of mischief & a cynical eye toward his bourgeoisie upbringing.

from 'le beau serge' to 'bellamy', claude strove to provide criminal context. perhaps, it was his inherent sense of justice that drove him.
