My #Choctaw language teacher once corrected a classmate who tried to say a stream was running. "Streams don't have legs," she said, so they can't be 'balili,' the Choctaw word for 'run.'

Like many #Native languages, #Chahta is literal and descriptive. A spoon is an eat-with. A toy is a play-with. Instead of dozens of words for "beef" (sirloin, hamburger, filet mignon, etc.), we call it what it is: COW MEAT.

My takeaway from all this is that #English is a liar's language.

I always look forward to the #ChoctawNation holiday card and ornament. This year the ornament is a sapsucker, or "biskinik."

Fun fact: the Choctaw "Merry Christmas" greeting translates very roughly to "happy big holy day," which my kids have decided is their preferred phrasing now. #choctaw #chahta
