There's something so satisfying about the melodic progression in the chorus of 'Tell Me Something Good' by Rufus and Chaka Khan

I have the musicological knowledge of a crow (ie random shiny things I picked up because I liked) so I am probably not going to do a good job when I 'tell you' why it's 'something good'

The verse melody and chord progression sound precarious, travelling down with a kind of off-balance rhythm, but then just n e s t l i n g into the 9th note in the G7 chord with those open vowels on "inside", "fire", "pride"

but then the chorus explodes upwards instead, and the A major triad arpeggio on the first three words leads you to expect the high A on 'good', but instead it resolves upwards to the tonic note of a minor seventh

(A) Tell me (E) something (F#m7) good

that ~rolls~ the chorus over into a standard 1-6-2-5 progression that sounds familiar to the ears and (for me at least) feels like cornering on rails

also, the way the vocals are chorused sounds so gleeful
