I really love this suite (or whatever proper name that should be). It’s a set of songs and a story.
The lyrics and the music fuse nicely into each other. Both are… quintessentially Chinese, so to speak. There’s the imagery that brings me back to the long summer days of the lost homeland of my great-grandfather’s; yet also a hidden longing for modernity.

This beautiful setting of a fifteen-century-old text presents a familiar feeling: returning home after a long absence. Composed by #Jacksonville #University Professor of #Composition He Jianjun, "Song of Chile" (pronounced CHOO-luh) is one of my favorite pieces from our Nature & Nurture concert last year. It is sung in #Mandarin and the translation is available in the notes on YouTube.
