I was watching an interview with Neil de Grasse Tyson, scientist and host of the new "Cosmos" series. The earlier "Cosmos" was hosted by Carl Sagan, a stoner, who has inspired in me a lifetime of curiosity and wonder.

Tyson gives the analogy of cave people. If every problem within the cave must be solved first, before anyone in the cave is allowed to go on an expedition outside, that is not good. Maybe the solution lies outside the cave. Therefore, we must fund space programs.

However, this analogy is flawed. There is plenty of food in the cave, enough to feed everyone in the cave. But many people are starving, while a few people have piles of food. These people with piles of food tell everyone that maybe they should be allowed to leave the cave, to solve the mystery of the starving people, and find a solution. For this expedition, they will need to take food out of the cave, and they may never come back, because they are brave heroes. Everybody, gather around and help Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Richard Branson, and other noble adventurers, for surely they will bring prosperity and equality to all.

Surely a more efficient solution is possible.
