I'm late for #MountainMonday this week.
This is Granite Mountain, one of the dominant peaks along the Pacific Crest in San Diego County, at the transition zone from the higher elevation yellow pine woodlands and montane chaparral into the low-lying deserts.
Here it is decorated with a puffy cloud and complemented by white-flowering Ceanothus and Western Redwood, this year in May 2023.

This is what our Southern California chaparral & sage scrub hillsides look like right now — such a unique color palette, I love it.
The orange hair is dodder, a parasitic plant that grows on/in other plants (the variety we have here doesn't kill the host plant), the blue-green are evergreen scrub oaks, there's the tall, purplish stalks of white sage, white flower clusters of California buckwheat... and more :)

A look at post-fire regrowth in a #Chaparral plant community: this place burned in both 2017 AND 2020.
#CAnative plants like bay laurel and greasewood are sprouting new shoots from root burls.
Even after two fires, there's a LOT of standing fuel.

It's another #FoggyFriday (at least for me, on Mastodon — it's all clear-skied and sunny here in Southern California) so here's a solitary Torrey Pine in dense coastal fog, photographed in spring of 2017, when the coastal #chaparral — that's the shrubs in the foreground — is prettiest. You can see tiny little yellow dots there, which are the flowers of a Bush Poppy.

Cushing Manzanita (Arctostaphylos glandulosa ssp cushingiana) stump sprouting from a burl after the 2017 Nuns Canyon fire. Of the 4 species we have in this area, this is the only stump sprouter. It was first to resprout post fire, while the others have come back well from seed. This specimen has seen a LOT of historic fires over the years (1923, 1964 known). The Burl is about 5 feet in diameter. Has to be well over 100 years old. #floraspondence #ChaparralFire #chaparral
