Many servers have more then a 10k #CharacterLimit. Forty-three non-noxious English-language instances, says mastodon{dot}help. The one I'm on has a limit of 100,500 characters. They used to max out at a million characters, but the new top seems to be ~8M. Anything over 10k is performative, IMO.
I've just read an 11-part post and a 16-part post. To which I say: if you're a master of brevity, and can almost always confine yourself to 500 characters, with a rare lapse into a second part, fine, stick with your current Mastodon server.
But if you find yourself regularly posting stuff that's 1000, 3000, 6000 characters, either petition your admin to raise the #CharacterLimit of your server, or find a server – Mastodon, Calckey, Akkoma, whatever – with a limit more commensurate with your writing. You'll appreciate it, as will your readers.
(Even this little post is over 500 characters. Unless I'm answering a question that doesn't require detail, I find my default post usually is.)
@sysop408 I wanted a short name on a server that was neither huge nor tiny. Coincidentally, I also got a server with a very high #CharacterLimit.
@David. "after all, #Mastodon only allows for 500 characters per post"
By default. But plenty of servers have changed their #CharacterLimit to 5000 or 10,000 or more:

You may not have noticed, but aus.social has increased its character limit to 3,000 🔥
Great for circumstances when you just need that little bit extra (https://aus.social/@MarkIngs/109795975914685582)
There are 63 English-language Mastodon servers with a #CharacterLimit of at least 10k. Ten are 100k+.
Personally, excepting quick replies, I find my basic posts are closer to 1000 characters than 500, and an involved post can be triple that. I think my longest post was about 5k.
Been hunting around for instances that have a high character limit. If you’re aware of any that have a high limit and a good local community please let me know. Those I’ve come across are indicated below and I’ve just discovered

Is there an easy way to see what the #CharacterLimit of a particular Mastodon server is without joining it?

@stefan
I chose "not size," but in fact that was a factor, except I didn't want large or small, but medium. I looked at general instances between 1k and 5k, and I wanted a short name and a high #CharacterLimit.
@strypey
Would having a backup account on a high #CharacterLimit server count as an interim solution? There are a handful with a limit of 100,000 characters or more. You'd post on the long-message instance, then reply or boost from your main server.
@jasonpettus
Six English-language servers with a #CharacterLimit of 100,000 or more. You have to respect toot.cat for jumping straight to one million.
@eric @NatureMC @dasgrueneblatt
You have to respect toot.cat for jumping to a nice, round one million. Makes the four who stopped around 100k seem like underachievers. #characterLimit
Instances describe their ambience in various ways: gaming, lgbtq, coding, artists, more. Have any ever emphasized the length of their allowed posts? I randomly chose a server that happens to allow posts of 100,000 characters more than the default 500 (I chose it because it has a short name), but I don't recall that being mentioned anywhere. Just #wondering.

Tried to use @buffer to post to my business Mastodon page, (as well as Google Business page)...
#Buffer cannot handle the adjustable character limit of #Mastodon , and as such, Buffer has a hard limit of only 500 characters, which is dumb, because I've connected it to a Mastodon server with a 2,000 character limit.
As my business pages are tech related, How the hell am I supposed to make detailed and in-depth posts about how to avoid being scammed? (Obviously, I have to do these manually per service, which defeats the purpose of using Buffer).
My first post was to be about 1,200 characters, about an SMS scam claiming to be from the Australian service "MyGov", with full instructions on how to enable spam protection in SMS on android and iOS, as well as the obligatory "MyGov will never ask you to do this" etc warnings that some less tech savvy people just don't realise.
Nope, Buffer sticks a 500 character limit on you regardless of what mastodon server you're on.

A couple interesting #mastodon tidbits I just learned after noticing I was able to exceed the #CharacterLimit in certain of my toots:
1) Links count as 23 characters, no matter how long or short they are. The documentation notes that this means link shorteners are pointless, and are also discouraged.
2) When you mention someone, only their username counts towards the character limit. Their instance name isn't counted.
Is there any good reason why there should be a #characterlimit on a #mastodon #toot ? If a person wants to #waffle, let them.

I'm guessing the character limit of posts in Mastodon is set by the way each instance is set up? And if I wanted to have more than 500 chars/post, I would need to find a new instance that has this available? #Mastodon #Instance #CharacterLimit
