Well, I can't say enough good things about 'Women Beware the Devil.' It's on at the Almeida Theatre until late March. Go see it!

A gloriously theatrical combination of the English Civil War, witchfinders, Puritans, gender, religion, hypocrisy, and, of course, sex... 🎭

"Good morning all & on this day in 1649, King Charles I was murdered and martyred in London after a heinous show trial instigated by a thoroughly illegitimate Parliamentary regime. "I shall go from a corruptible to an incorruptible Crown". The King's final word: "Remember"."

"when his
Majesty had done speaking, and had pulled off his cloak
and doublet, and stood stripped in his waistcoat, and that
the villains in vizards began to put up his hair, the good
Bishop no longer able to endure so dismal a sight, and being
full of grief and horror for that most wicked fact now ready
to be executed, grew pale and began to faint"

Born 1591, Robert Devereux, 3rd earl of Essex. Among noble critics of Charles I, Essex was commander-in-chief when Parliament went to war against the king. In 1644 a disastrous military campaign ended his military career, ushering in Sir Thomas Fairfax & the New Model army.
