Last bottle I had of this just a month ago was a bit of a disappointment as this seemed well over the hill. (Don't worry, on that occasion a 99 Pegau was lovely.) Drink up, right? I have definitely waited a little too long on some of the wines in this category. But this bottle seems pretty nice. Maybe not perfect, but pretty nice. It is an old saying: as they age it depends on the bottle not the wine.

A chilly, rainy day called for meatloaf, mashed potatoes and this beauty of an aged CdP. This 2009 Vieux Lazaret has black cherries turning gently leathery, a touch of wood spice, and dark chocolate notes. Full but silky, good length, a winter-weight wine that matched nicely with today’s early spring conditions.

A tale of 3 mature Chauteauneufs. They don't have a reputation for aging as well some regions, but I have a lot of old wine to go through.

The best here was the '99 Pegau, a favorite, vibrant, mature but not decayed. The 2000 Janasse was a little past prime, could have benefited from being drunk a few years earlier, but pleasing, esp. with the flavorful foods I had with it. The '95 Janasse Chaupin--over the hill, a little maderized and raisiny. Can't win them all!
