The biggest threat that #ChatpGPT seems to pose to translation and interpreting right now is actually in marketing.

ChatGPT can already write fluent marketing guff about accuracy, impartiality and the need for professional interpreters and translators. If anyone is going to write anything that will actually stand out, they will need to be much more relevant and creative.

@davetroy How can you say systems like #ChatpGPT are absent "cognition" or "meaning" or "semantics"? Last I checked we haven't invented a measuring device that measures those things. And even if we had, the building of those devices depends on question-begging theoretical assumptions. Some cognitive theorists believe bacteria demonstrate cognition. There is no theoretical consensus on what these metaphysical things are, outside of arbitrary stipulated definitions.

So.... I asked #ChatpGPT to write the start of a #Thrutopian novel. Gave it the character names of main protagonists, ages -and aims. The result is... not too far off what Adam Brookes got for the start of his spy novel. Totally formulaic.

BUT - the rest of the (long) conversation was fascinating. Will invite it onto the #podcast if it can speak. :)
