Yes! was a brilliant author, but however excellent, it is a shame the plays get all the attention. I always thought his most impressive talents were in his stories, and particularly the ultra-short stories. His ability to set a mood and an atmosphere in 10 pages with similar entirely dialog is unparalleled in anything I have read, at least.
Pro tip: He was an immensely bored country doctor. Keep an eye out for those in his stories.

From G. S. Morson's Apr. 6 of Bob Blaisdell's book on : asked for his bio, Chekhov responded, "In 1890 I made a trip to Sakhalin across Siberia... In 1891 I toured Europe, where I drank splendid wine and ate oysters. In 1892 I strolled with V. A. Tikhonov at [a writer's] name-day party... I have been translated into all languages with the exception of the foreign ones... I am a bachelor. I would like a pension."

N.B., I would also like a pension.

Every time I watch a TV drama and there’s some seemingly trivial incident, and it’s always TEDIOUSLY OBVIOUS it’s going to be relevant later, I think ’s Gun is now just an absolutely terrible idea

OLGA: (looking at her watch) It's time for bed. (She gets up from the table)

MASHA: (sighing) What a boring life we lead here.

OLGA: I'm in mourning for my life.

MASHA: I know what you mean. It's so dull here.

OLGA: (sighing) Yes, I often feel like I'm just marking time.

MASHA: (nodding) And every day is just like the one before it.

OLGA: (sadly) We never have any adventures or excitement.

MASHA: (nodding) And we never will as long as we stay here.

"The Chameleon" (1884)
by Anton Chekhov

In the town square, a police superintendent comes upon a commotion - a stray dog has bitten a man. Bystanders offer observations and speculation about the dog's ownership, influencing the superintendent's decision.

Deceptively simple at first glance, Chekhov's tale provides a glimpse into, and perhaps criticism of, the class structure of 19th century Russia.

Latest read, Oh! The Public! (1885) and Children (1886) by Anton Chekhov; in each of these tales, characters represent various types. The first is a clash between a zealous, officious ticketmaster & a passenger; the second sketches children's attitude toward money & competition.
Chekhov can feel deceptively simple but they're astute stories.

“It seems to me that when you write a short story, you have to cut off both the beginning and the end. We writers do most of our lying in those spaces.” Anton Chekhov, born in 1860
