When we first got there in 2014 this was not as huge of an issue, then I think some big money got involved where farmers were incentivized to cut costs and slash and burn. AQI would literally be around 400, like we were smoking a pack of cigarettes every day. Every year government would pledge to do something about this, and every year NOTHING was done.

However when I lived in #ChiangRai #Thailand I saw how a small business did indeed make considerable profit off of recycling. Near my neighborhood there was a very simple recycling center privately run by a local guy. In the 8 years I lived there I saw his simple shop triple in size over time and his business grew.

A few impressions of Thailand's northernmost major city #ChiangRai, which I visited for three days during my #Thailand #trip in December 2021. The city of 200k inhabitants features some stunning buildings including the white & blue #temples, the "Big Buddha" which in fact represents Guanyin, the Chinese Goddess of Mercy. One further non-religious building is the unique Clock tower, which delivers a light and music show multiple times at nightfall.

The village #MaeSalong in #ChiangRai 🇹🇭 has a Chinese character. The inhabitants are the descendants of #Kuomintang (#KMT) soldiers who were pushed out of #China, when the communists took over in 1949. When you walk through the village, the #streetart shows the Chinese spirit.
