Centre suspends chief of institute that prepares family health survey

International Institute for Population Sciences Director KS James had reportedly been asked to quit as the government had reservations about some data sets.

The Wire reported that some of the findings of the National Family Health Survey-5 were at odds with claims made by the Narendra Modi government. The survey has punched holes in the prime minister’s claims of the country being open defecation free.

Synchronised increase of deaths among 5-24 year olds as opposed to decrease in the rest of the population is unusual, the variations in most possibly responsible causes of death - in a longer perspective - are not so.
Exceptions:
- leukaemia and skin tumours in 5-9 year olds
- bone tumours in 10-14 year olds
- suicides in the 10-14 and 20-24 year olds
- diseases of the digestive and nervous systems in the 15-19 year olds, and
- other transport accidents in the 20-24 year olds.

Since 2021, excess mortality in younger people has been on the rise in Europe and Spain. There, while mortality decreased in the population as a whole, people aged 5 to 24 years suffered increases of between 14 and 22 percent, compared to 2020. According to the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE), the tendency continued in 2022, and the excess mortality monitoring instruments on the European (EuroMOMO) and Spanish level (MoMoISCIII) confirm it.
