: Ruth Plumly Thompson (July 27, 1891 – April 6, 1976) was an American writer of children's stories, best known for writing many novels placed in Oz, the fictional land of L. Frank Baum's classic children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its sequels. Following Baum's death in 1919, she wrote one Oz book a year until 1939. In all, she wrote a total of 21 Oz books -- more than Baum himself.

Something wonderful happened today! My second picture book arrived, and I got to hold it and see it for the first time! I am so thankful to everyone who has supported my writing and anxious to share my second book with all of you! I will have several book signings this summer and will share dates with all of you as soon as they are finalized! Looking forward to seeing all of you this summer! Thank you again!

As some of you may know, recently I made a book with Walker Books in the UK, written by the historian Tom Holland. It eschews much of the nonsense relating to the movie versions of the Battle of Thermopylae. Here’s the cover, and I’ll be sharing some more of the artwork in coming weeks.

2/2 It's also becoming apparent that fantasy and science fiction are not particularly popular genres. Children's experience of other worlds and therefore their ability to create their own imaginary spaces when writing is sadly lacking. I'm doing what I can, but I really wish parents would step up and do better (and I know it isn't that simple - I'm a parent myself).

On the edits to the Roald Dahl / controversy: "The assumption that there is an urgent debate here, one of the utmost importance to the future of culture, society and so on, is politically useful to both sides. But what both sides are really arguing about is not whether it's ever OK to make posthumous edits, but who gets to make them and why." nytimes.com/2023/03/03/opinion

I don't think Dahl's books should be edited to have all the offensive language removed. But neither do I think this language should just be ignored or passively tolerated by teachers and parents. There's a problem with treating literary classics, particularly children's books, as "timeless." /1

Several of my students have relatives who ya e to deal with separation anxieties, whether they come from parents working long hours or loved people who live away, mostly due to migratory restrictions. For some of them it is very hard to deal with so I incorporated this little book, to open the conversation about what connects us to the people we love.

According to a new survey published on Wednesday, there is a 'disturbing' lack of Holocaust awareness in the Netherlands, esp. among the millennials and Gen Z respondents (i.e. the under 4O). That is a 'red' flag for education which includes literature as well. One of those books that should be read/taught to the young ones is 'Erika' > bookworm-sue-in-english.blogsp

Is this the new twitter? Is this safe social media? Will we all be tooting by next year instead of tweeting or whatever it is that happens on relentless tiktok? Tentatively hoping this will be a a gentle open forum for creativity without life sapping distractions and sniping.
Maybe I’m being naive.
There’s always the “Delete Account” button.

Another I found is “Same but Different”. Two children become pen pals and share about the places in which they live. I like this story because it can be a very good stater for conversations about cultural differences, and the things we all share as humans
