i really love that Google Books gives me a sample of books I'm thinking of reading. Usually, I read a chapter or two, then order it from my library.
And then sometimes I read a chapter or two, and keep reading until the sample is done. And am desperate to read on.
It may leave me temporarily miserable to be left aloft mid-story, but at least it promises that I'll really enjoy that book.

This is such a good podcast from agent Jennifer Laughran and YA author Sara Zarr about the creative life, writing careers as a meditative labyrinth, the urge to get drafts out before they're ready, and more: https://literaticast.libsyn.com/55-into-the-labyrinth-with-sara-zarr

As a writer, I'm always fascinated by art's relationship with narrative in a book. I'm a huge fan of cover art and interior art in books for any age of reader, though of course #KidLit in particular. This article (which I found thanks to the artist who created my first two books' covers, Antonio Javier Caparo) goes into art, narrative, and books in gorgeous detail: https://www.muddycolors.com/2023/02/the-book-as-object/?fbclid=IwAR3XmfMmcem_DMffgEmFrg9SfzO0T2h8om-b_5psXwQfpjlipKVnczBJ71w

I've been off social media for a bit, dreaming up a revision for a novel I very much want to see in print, and am discovering why (as I tell students at my school talks) I love revision: This is the point of the writing process where the ideas take hold, new ideas come forth, and you truly learn what your story is about. It's like magic to feel it all come together.

I was just thinking of how much I love to see visual art evolve: from sketch to more detailed, to something really amazing, then more details, and it's gorgeous.
Funny how this would never be satisfying with a piece of writing: the baggy first draft, the major cuts and rewriting for the first revision, cuts of the bad rewriting and more rewriting for the second revision, maybe a total rewrite, then cuts, tweaks, revision x 3 or more…not pretty!

One of my biggest hopes for the New Year (I hesitate to call this a "resolution" because I've been working on it over the past six months too) is to not let the bumps and blows that we all get as authors take me down too much; and to remember both my own immense joy in creating, and the unbridled joy of my young readers.

I've just figured out a revision I've been mulling over for weeks. It's like magic: Ideas cling to the formative early draft, taking shape as the emerging deeper story. I love it when that happens.
It's easy to feel doubtful about that early draft, but when it all comes together, I know that I've put in the right parts. This reminds me how crucial it is not to be tied completely to an early draft as revision has the power to make it true.

One of the hardest things for me about writing #KidLit is the sheer number of ideas that ping at me throughout my brainstorming. #MGLit is all about questions and enthusiasm, and when I'm channeling it correctly, there's so much! It really is like herding cats sometime getting everything in order. #AmWriting #ChildrensFiction

This week, I've been watching videos of my son as he was growing up. Watching those when he was my readership's age (3rd through 5th grade) was an important reminder of what kids that age are like. The enthusiasm, eagerness, sheer delight in learning, and unadorned quiet confidence. He has always been someone who might now show this on the outside to everyone, but it's clear that he had this inside. This is why I write for this age. There is no greater honor. #KidLit #MGLIT #ChildrensFiction

So I was chatting earlier about how teachers and librarians find #ChildrensFiction, and I'm now curious: Has what I've seen and heard about on the bird site and irl in my own small town reflected what's going on in the greater world?
So here's a question for #KidLit people who are teachers or children's librarians or who know them well: How do you prefer to learn about new #ChildrensBooks? What are your best sources? Thank you!

When my son was starting to read #MGLit, I began to write it. And I realized that this is where I belonged. I was still writing bleak stuff (full of death), and the idea of weaving in humor and lightness, warmth, and a 12-year-old voice, was irresistible.
My first true #MGLit, written after reading a lot of it (and discussing it with my son, an avid reader in 3rd grade), I wrote The Mad Wolf's Daughter. And found my home in #ChildrensFiction. So glad to be here where I belong.

So I've been in love with #KidLit pretty much all my life. I always told stories, and began putting it to the page when I was a teen. But once I was in high school, I thought I needed to write Heavy Lit Fic to be a serious writer (there is such snobbery—which I still see today—around #ChildrensFiction—in the literary world, which is such a shame, as this kind of fiction is deep, powerful, engaging, so much fun, yet not at all easy to write!). And so I gave up writing what I loved most. 1/3
A lovely article about Jason Reynolds and Joseph Coelho, two amazing #kidlit authors who are ambassadors for children's literature in their respective nations (U.S. and UK), sharing their thoughts about reaching children, modeling literacy, and encouraging reading: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2022/dec/17/ive-been-banned-since-the-beginning-jason-reynolds-talks-to-joseph-coelho?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other #ChildrensFiction #PictureBook #MGLit
