1973年9月11日，智利军队推翻了萨尔瓦多·阿连德的社会主义政府。奥古斯托·皮诺切特将军的独裁统治在智利建立。

这些事件今天依然有很多值得反思的教训。例如，智利的历史讲述了政府更多地依赖教条而不是对现实的分析所采取的鲁莽行动（这既适用于努力建设社会主义的阿连德，也适用于皮诺切特和“芝加哥男孩”，他们的处方并不适合所有地方）。

但智利也有一些其他的东西 —— 权力的和平移交（尽管前独裁者及其同伙后来受到清算）、后独裁联合政府以及对过去的反思。

智利的经验表明，两极分化的言论通常不会产生任何效果。一个突出的例子是，左翼势力提出的新宪法在2022年的全民公决中遭到失败，之后右翼政客也参与了修宪工作。

经济学人曰："为了向前迈进，阿连德和皮诺切特必须成为历史的一部分，而不是激励和榜样的源泉”。同意这一说法。

毕竟，归根结底，这个故事与其说是关于智利的，不如说是关于 整个政治进程的。

两极分化和独裁统治的危险，对过去徒劳无益（但却激烈痛苦）的争论的泥潭，以及最终的合作和对未来妥协的希望 —— 这不只是关于智利，也是关于我们所有人的。
