i've been looking for a copy of 'Half of a Yellow Sun' for the past year, and today i finally found it in the local used book store. my favourite of #ChimamandaNgoziAdichie 's books.
'Once, [Jomo] shot a bush pigeon down from the cashew tree with a small stone, wrapped it in leaves, and put it into his bag. "Don't go to that bag unless I am around," he told Ugwu. "You might find a human head there." Ugwu laughed but had not entirely doubted Jomo.'

tonight's read: Ifemelu's in-universe blog, from #ChimamandaNgoziAdichie 's 'Americanah' (2013)
'I bought a dress from a vintage shop on eBay the other day, made in 1960. ...[M]aybe the original owner was one of those women, in the famous sepia photographs, standing by in hordes outside schools shouting "Ape!" at young black children because they did not want them to go to school with their young white children. Where are those women now? Do they sleep well? Do they think about shouting "Ape"?'

tonight's listen: #ChimamandaNgoziAdichie 's speech at the PEN centenary symposium: wherein she talks about the power of words, the attack on Salman Rushdie, and how the freedom to write is an essential corollary of the freedom to read. she speaks from the perspective of a Nigerian-American and discusses the 'American* addiction to comfort' as a stifling force, & what is lost when the priority of discourse shifts to comfort instead of truth-telling.
daily VW: this time not #VirginiaWoolf herself but #ChimamandaNgoziAdichie 's riff on Mrs Dalloway, 'The Arrangements,' imagined as a day in the life of Melania Trump. i spied this bilingual short story collection at the local thrift store & couldn't snatch it off the shelf fast enough.
i get a little thrill of recognition in hearing a bit of Virginia's voice in writers as different as Adichie, Toni Morrison, Salman Rushdie, & no doubt countless others. briefly her ghost flits into the room.

My takeaway from #chimamandangoziadichie ‘s talk was this “The single story creates #stereotypes and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.”
So simple yet so complete! Single stories result in fixed assumptions and conclusions. We need to know that there aren’t single stories, that single stories cut us off from the reality, or at least they portray the partial images.

new book day: 'Notes on Grief' by #ChimamandaNgoziAdichie (2021). wherein she describes the aftermath of her father's death, in scenes that remind me of the better episodes of Six Feet Under--
'My four-year-old daughter says I scared her. She gets down on her knees to demonstrate, her small clenched fist rising and falling, and her mimicry makes me see myself as I was: utterly unraveling, screaming and pounding the floor.'

idk why people act like #literature appreciation is an elitist hobby when these books are really just the cheapest ones you can find at any thrift store, and their only barrier to entry is the sort of education you can get in a Canadian public high school
(all of these books cost me less than $5 each at the local thrift store)

If you're interested in understanding freedom of speech and how its been weaponized through social media companies and their platforms (performative spaces) and representation of the debate by formerly respectable "newspapers" and "tv news broadcasts", then this is your hour of enlightenment (whether you agree or not with her). https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001fmtz

Excellent #ReithLecture on #FreedomOfSpeech by #ChimamandaNgoziAdichie. Great that people like #Chimamanda are retrieving this issue from 'free-speech warriors' on the Right but also a lesson for those on the Left tempted into #tribal self-censorship.

Author #chimamandangoziadichie said she worries society is suffering from an "epidemic of self-#censorship".
In #bbc #reith lecture on #freedom of #speech, (30.11.22 #bbcradio4 #BBCSounds) she said young people were growing up "afraid to ask questions for fear of asking the wrong questions".
Such a climate cld lead to "the death of curiosity, the death of learning+the death of creativity", award-winning #nigerian #author warned.
