Lotus flower chimney pots on the back of Alexander 'Greek' Thomson's 1859 Moray Place development.

Thomson used this distinctive style of chimney pot on many of his private dwellings, including his Holmwood House masterpiece.

Tenement chimneys, Campvale, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow. Built in 1873, I love the fact these chimneys still have their original chimney pots on them (well, most of them do).

There are two main reasons why the achitect couldn't have filled the spaces with real windows. If they are above the close door (as is the case with the building on the left), then they are there because of an internal staircase. If there are chimneys on the roof above them (like the building on the right), then they are there because of where the internal fireplaces and chimney flues are.

Have you ever noticed the apparently bricked up windows on Glasgow tenements and wondered what that's all about?

There are many theories floating around, but the real reason is to provide symmetry and balance when the architect couldn't put real windows in the spaces rather than having a blank bit of wall.
