"Dish with Two Boys," unknown artist, 16th century.
Something a little different. Here's a lacquered dish from China showing two boys playing. I think they're pretending to be soldiers; one is beating a drum while the other rides a hobbyhorse, which was actually invented in China.
From the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

The orchid used to represent good taste and beauty in Chinese traditional culture. They symbolize elegance, nobility and self-respect. They also belongs to the "Four Gentlemen of Chinese Painting" - the plum blossom, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum and represent one of the four seasons!

Behind the Window is a brush painting in traditional Chinese free style technique (shan shui) with ink on rice paper.
It's a look out of the window on a rainy day in the Yellow Mountain China.
I have visited the Yellow Mountain in November and it was foggy, rainy and mystery. Therefore I painted the mountains in rain.

Bamboo has been an important and meaningful subject for painting during many periods in Chinese history.
The Chinese often compare bamboo to gentleman for its unique character of being neither cringing nor arrogant. Furthermore, bamboo painting is symbolic of self-effacing, integrity and safety.

I just realised there's 20yrs between these two pieces. To the left is a poster with a panoramic view over the Forbidden City in Beijing. I bought it on site 1998. To the right is a battered silk painting a friend of my parents bought in China 1978. (Yes, I need to give the painting a better home. I framed it when I was ten, so it's not the best casing. OTH the frame probably protected it through several chaotic moves.)

Banana leaves are a common ingredient in Chinese painting. Often used as a background together with birds or other animals.
The leaves are painted with quick strokes and sweeping out of the hand. It requires a special technique to fill the brush with the right amount of ink.

This is the third painting of my crayfish series.
Crayfish sounds like the word laugh in mandarin, so it symbolizes happiness and joy. Sometimes its auspiciousness also represents good fortune and long life.
