This morning I gathered various dry ingredients for 8 Treasure Congee ( 腊八粥) including lotus seeds. As I measured out some seeds, I thought about how distinctive the entire plant is. The flowers, the roots, and the seeds all have a distinct and maybe a little unusual appearance. It's pretty cool. Also thinking of making some lotus root, wood ear, celery, and carrot stir fry, if the store has any.
In other food news, our kids absolutely housed the lasagna I made Thursday night. Mr. 9 says that only Pizza Hut pizza is better than my lasagna.

We're still eating leftovers from the lion's head meatball (狮子头)so, we'll have that and some rice for dinner. I'll also make some vinegar stir-fried cabbage. I'm going to use a recipe tonight, which I don't do anymore. It's from Hannah Che's cookbook, the Vegan Chinese Kitchen. The recipe has different ingredients for the sauce than the way I learned to cook it. I bought her cookbook after hearing her on the Splendid Table. I was aware that there are strong vegetarian/vegan traditions within Chinese cooking, but that was really the extent of my knowledge.

Stir-fried more napa cabbage to add to the leftover lion's head meatballs (狮子头)and that will simmer to reheat for about an hour. I've prepped all the ingredients for the eggplant, bell pepper, and potato stir fry (地三鲜), and I'll make that in a about 15 minutes. It is not hard to make, and it doesn't take long to make, but it does take patience. We'll have some leftover rice and my spouse is baking sweet potatoes, in case the kids want them.
