This is the Wang Yin poem I was looking forward most to seeing in translation: "The English," from _A Summer Day in the Company of Ghosts_, tr. Andrea Lingenfelter.

Ooo, I really like this @SabinaKnight review of Julian Gewirtz's new book on the history of the Chinese 1980s AND his poetry collection _Your Face My Flag_, which gets into some of the power of the poet-historian/historian-poet: lareviewofbooks.org/article/th. It's a Very Poetry Turn essay (icymi: read.dukeupress.edu/prism/arti).

Reading this interview between translator + translation scholar Wang Baorong and Julia Lovell about her Lu Xun volume, and at the end he really digs in! Brings the spicy conflicts endemic to the translator/editor relationship out into the open: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10

Oh, man, these new Zang Di poems, tr. Eleanor Goodman: asymptotejournal.com/poetry/th. A great poet at the height of his power and pain, a great translator with the license to write poetry onto the poetry.

I just finished "White Horse" by Yan Ge, and it's a quick, engrossing read. I was eager to read this because I enjoyed her "Strange Beasts of China" so much earlier this year. Recommended!

LOVE this Haiyan Lee essay on the affirmative action decision -- a great work of legal analysis, US-China comparison, scholarly positionality, and humanist commitment.

Now available with a free author link (read.dukeupress.edu/prism/arti): my article "The Poetry Turn: Writing Chinese Cultural Studies between Empires" in PRISM. It translates and discusses poet-scholars that work on Chinese literature and culture, and argues that when you're trapped between empires, you need the kind of subject formation that poems do best. The piece ends with a real plea to respect academic Chinglish as an aesthetic, intellectual, and futurist language. Enjoy!

“A place where wild grass doesn’t grow is a place devoid of flowers, and has no people, either.

That’s why it’s only when wild grass appears in the temples that we know nobody will ever kneel in this place again, that this place will become an exuberant garden overflowing with hundreds of types of flowers; wild grass is the proof of the sunshine and the spring wind." (, 2/3)

poetry scholar Maghiel van Crevel wrote a comprehensive introduction to the new wealth of contemporary underground Chinese poetry magazines that got posted to the archive: u.osu.edu/mclc/2023/06/22/new-. I have been digging into an anthology that I had only faintly heard of, the _Wild Grass Poetry Anthology_, which is a fascinating collection of Sichuanese avant-garde poetry from the 70s, 80s and 90s. I'll translate a chunk of the foreword:

Oh ho ho, the Leiden archive of unofficial Chinese poetry journals just made its annual update, 200+ new scans of poetry journals and anthologies that includes a bunch of queer work and a lot more worker's poetry: library.universiteitleiden.nl/. Archive is here, I'll post interesting stuff over the next few days: digitalcollections.universitei.

Finally read some Can Xue, in Karen Gernant and Chen Zeping's excellent translation. She is a fairly prolific author, this book turned out to be the right place to start. It would be interesting to know more about the contexts of original publication and her reception in China -- some stories are designed as 'magazine writing' and the experimentalism is meeting a readership. Here's an extract from the title story. yalebooksblog.co.uk/2021/04/09

'"If a single university student cannot find a job, perhaps he is to blame. But unemployment among undergraduates is so high. Can we blame them all for not taking off Kong Yiji's long gown?" asked a user on the Quora-like platform Zhihu.

"A low salary is not the scariest thing. The lack of social welfare protection and opportunities to acquire new skills is," he added.

I contributed to Cha Magazine's act of Tiananmen remembrance, the Just Another Day project: chajournal.blog/2023/06/04/nic. I wrote about my own public space and my own grief, but it's at heart a piece about 6/4. Lots of people contributed and I'll pick some of my favorites out in a thread:
