It’s a sort of symmetry-breaking that makes molecules, which nominally have the same atomic makeup, mirror-images of one another, with totally different biological properties. A “left-handed” version of one molecule might be therapeutic, while the “right-handed” one is toxic.

Junji Ito gets it *mostly* right in his snail imagery. In this image, left-coiling snails have their genitals on the right, when they should be on the left. They are of course hermaphrodites, not "both males".
