Ive been doing a lot of social critique posts, so here is a picture of a chiton I found the other day.
Based on my tentative amateur identification, this is a Mossy Chiton, (Mopalia muscosa). This little mollusk was soaking in the sun in the intertidal zone, likely eager for the water to return.
Chitons, or Polyplacophorans, are severely underrated. As a group they date back fo the late Cambrian/early Ordovician, and share many similarities with the famous Halwaxiids.

Next up in my 2022 favourite photos round-up we have a common chiton (Lepidochitona cinerea). This mollusc come in a variety of patterns and colours and I thought this one was particularly special because of its pink girdle that matches the pink encrusting algae it’s sitting on. You can see the polymorphism (the physical variety) of these guys on my website. I made a database of them!
