Natural gas caused the #Palmer #ChocolateFactory explosion. The loss of seven lives was completely preventable.

The #blast at the #Palmer #ChocolateFactory in Pennsylvania (where 7 people died, 1 of the buildings was destroyed, and gas is a poss cause) reminded me of an article I had written awhile ago.

There was an #explosion at an #Armour meat factory building in #StJoseph MO in 1930. There were quite a few similarities to the modern factory disaster: Like the modern explosion, gas was suspected, an entire building was leveled, & the explosion happened around the time workers were done for the day.

The 1930 blast sent the roof of the six-story building between 50-100 feet in the air, killing 19 and injuring many. Four of the victims were young girls.

In my article, I embedded a link to a collection of newspaper articles abt the disaster. I also included a list of the victims and others whose names were in the articles. For these, I cross-referenced links to their #FamilySearch profiles, for any #Genealogists researching the event.

#BreakingNews - There was an #explosion around 5:00pm on Friday at the #Palmer #ChocolateFactory in #WestReading #Pennsylvania. The moment of the #blast was captured on a nearby CCTV weather cam.

As of midday Saturday (March 25th), the number of confirmed dead has been upped to 3, with 4 people still unaccounted for. The factory employs approx. 850 people.

Authorities are using #SearchAndRescue dogs & specialized equipment to look for more survivors.

Building No.2 is completely destroyed. Some of the nearby factory buildings were severely damaged, with another entire building reportedly pushed a few feet forward.

No significant residential damage has been reported or confirmed. Unconfirmed reports indicate the possible smell of natural gas not long before the explosion, but authorities are not commenting on that at this time.

The R.M. Palmer plant produces primarily #chocolate #candies for holidays such as Easter, Halloween, & Christmas.

Die Kombination "Schokolade" und "Spiel" klingt nach leichter Unterhaltung, das Spiel hat aber die Köpfe gut zum Qualmen gebracht. 😅
