In so many novels the characters are mostly good, or mostly bad. They are mostly hurtful or mostly hurt.

But Ng's every detail--not one word wasted--reveals how hurtfulness is rooted in our own woundedness. The pov lets her reveal each character's deep pain and yet maintain their opaqueness to each other--no easy feat. Ng also deftly renders her characters as unevenly self aware--again, no easy trick.

I'm just blown away by this woman's writing.
