Jimmy Webb talks about this very thing in his terrific book "Tunesmith" but he starts much earlier - like the 1930s. He claims songwriters 'wore out' in 40-60s & modern songwriters started using more chordal chromaticism to make simpler melodies seem more interesting. Book was 1998 - so it seems the trend continued.

BTW - for 'Tunesmith' is the best. He covers the 'how-to' in ways no one else does.

For this week’s , we have a Zwiegesang (“Duet”) by Moszkowski from 1894. Mostly very sweet, might even seem demure, but beware a few surprising harmonic shifts hidden in the half-steps.

Today’s piece reestablishes the miniaturosity to which we’d grown accustomed. It’s by Georgy Catoire, whose music I’ve long enjoyed, but this is likely the only Catoire I’ll be able to manage for .
