Jimmy Webb talks about this very thing in his terrific book "Tunesmith" but he starts much earlier - like the 1930s. He claims songwriters 'wore out' #chromaticism in 40-60s & modern songwriters started using more chordal chromaticism to make simpler melodies seem more interesting. Book was 1998 - so it seems the trend continued.
BTW - for #songwriters 'Tunesmith' is the best. He covers the 'how-to' in ways no one else does.
For this week’s #weeklypiano #pianominiature, we have a Zwiegesang (“Duet”) by Moszkowski from 1894. Mostly very sweet, might even seem demure, but beware a few surprising harmonic shifts hidden in the half-steps.
