: refers to the study of tissue, blood, blood marrow, or culture cells in a laboratory, using banding or manipulating techniques to look for changes in the , including broken, missing, rearranged, or extra chromosomes.

Changes in the chromosomes may be a sign of a genetic disease or condition

As divide, they must copy all of their once and only once, or chaos would ensue. How do they do it? Key controls happen well before even starts.

@filipw If tracking where break and fuse is more robust than tracking individual , which I guess makes sense, then the method seems much more powerful than just for this result. Is it already a standard approach? The article doesn’t seem to say.

Happy birthday to Canadian geneticist Irene Ayako Uchida (1917-2013)! Uchida is shown surrounded by chromosones, with anomalies (shown with pink arrows) due to radiation exposure, based on one of her research papers. A strand of DNA is hidden in the image (as her watchband).

While studying the of the order of genes on , I computed numbers such as ”25 changes per megabase per million year”. To be closer to units and use only one I considered changing it to “800 changes per base per ”, but it makes no sense because no genome has a length of 1 base and the Universe is younger than 1 exasecond. So maybe “800 attochanges per base per second”?

Just for clarity purposes, when we talk about characteristics, we're talking about the biological traits in which define sex. This includes, but isn't limited to, genitals, gonads etc.

The problem is, these traits in themselves aren't . Looking at chromosomal groups as examples - they themselves are numerous, and having mosaicism or chimerism can exacerbate that to the extent of having different sets of chromosomes across your entire body's cells

Researchers at Rice University’s Center for Theoretical Biological Physics () are among the pioneers of a new approach to studying . Instead of focusing on as linear sequences of code, they’re looking for clues on how their folded 3D shapes might determine gene expression and regulation.

Okay, , they say that each cell in your body has 6.6 feet of DNA, and that you have 10 trillion cells or more.

6" of DNA is a nonsensical value since we're measuring something nanometers wide.

If that was the width of sewing thread, how long a spool/big a ball of thread would one 's be?

"The sex of human and other mammal babies is decided by a male-determining gene on the Y chromosome. But the human Y chromosome is degenerating and may disappear in a few million years, leading to our extinction unless we evolve a new sex gene".
