Some extra flair, hints of Zeal culture which shows the fashion evolving over time and some connections to his real form were obvious choices, playing around with the "pretending to be human and being kind of good about it, but not too good". As Yakra, hes mostly the same

Her original design, not seen in the sprite, is actually kind of buff. I loved that. Single mom, lives far away from the city, raising a for sure rascal and she has to handle all of that shit on her own. I also LOVED presenting every party member to her whenever you return home, such a cool way to build character!

Kino is a pretty basic character, if he reads like a wannabe hero who doesnt have his shit together and may or may not fuck up at any moment then mission accomplished. You also need to get the impression that he can grow into not being a total loser, so I couldn't go too wild here.

In #ChronoTrigger the Stone Age doesnt have much, but it has reptites! I made some changes, they had pink skin in places and instead I made that coral'ish armor. I want them to look smart, having tools, weapons and armor that sets them apart from humans

Then we have Azala! Queen of the Reptites! Made her more royal, complex and fun with a more extreme silhouette, it was a good way to keep adding layers to Reptite culture which is sorely needed

Atropos XR! Good chance to make some alterations to the factory model for a little extra personality. I considered changing the stereotypical pink but seeing how there are a lot of female character in this game, having one be a more "typical" girl and, even better, going the robot route did seem like a good thing to keep

300 years after the apocalypse humans have become tribal again, no food, sunshine, radiation, humans should look slightly different, it shouldn't be shocking to see cybernetic implants and discolored skin. They would still look for trinkets, they would still adorn their leaders with ways to distinguish them, this kind of stuff is prevalent through human history and it would persist even in 2300

2300 AD, Johnny, I remember being REALLY excited for the race sequence in Mode 7, it looked amazing!

I wanted him to have the one legged look and, if that means he transforms into a 3 wheel vehicle, that's fine. I liked the Greaser look so I tried to push it a bit more, made the leather jacket orange for some better contrast, kept the BADYEAR of course and went a little extra Kamina on the sunglasses because how could I not

We already have Crono, Frog, Cyrus and other people fighting in more traditional means so lets come up with something that feels like a very different style for a character of this type

In terms of memorable bad guys, Ozzie does pretty well for himself. Toriyama has a very particular way of drawing this type of character so I tried to be respectful of the silhouette and the fact that you get those giant metal underpants as a piece of armor (somehow) so I wanted to spend some time making that look important. Hes an opulent, arrogant asshole that is eager to fuck your shit up and characters like that are always fun to design.

My favorite redesign out of my whole Chrono Trigger project, one of Magus' generals, Flea!

I wanted to keep Flea fun, alluring, magical and still change elements from his portrayal that just haven't aged well. Hopefully this design resonates well with the old fans and it's a fresh enough look to stand on its own. This is a character that felt fairly progressive back then and still resonates with fans!

Cyrus and Tata, both holders of the Hero's Badge and you can tell its a very different kind of burden for each of them! They both represent different kinds of standard JRPG protagonists and #ChronoTrigger expertly subverts the trope!

The #ChronoTriggerReConcept project takes a turn to the past, to the 600 AD era!

Squire Glenn hints at his future in subtle ways but remains an NPC+ design. Being overshadowed by Cyrus is key but you see a fledgling swordsman in him.

For the adult/human version of Glenn I liked his original sprite, I instantly wanted to play a whole game as that character so I moved in that direction rather than his Son Gohan esque makeover in the anime cutscenes.

Last Zeal Kingdom concept for a little while, and a favorite, Dalton! I knew I wanted to lean HEAVY on the #JoJo influences. He is an extravagant person WITHIN Zeal so he needed to be extra on top of extra ... and what better inspiration than Arakis work?

He's a great villain, the rare mix that serves as comic relief and you still have to take him seriously. The boss fight with him inside the Black Omen is one of the hardest in the game as well.

Staying with Zeal Kingdom for a bit, the Three Gurus were a real fan favorite as they each impacted the story in a real, palpable unique way and really fleshed out all the interconnected parts of the game.

As before, read the image description for more detailed thoughts but this was a good chance to add variety and push each character into their designed role more fully. Also a good chance for a gender change, game needs it.

It's time for some Kingdom of Zeal designs for #ChronoTriggerReConcept , starting with the main family: Queen Zeal, Schala and Janus.

I put full concept descriptions in the text description to deal with the character limit but I loved making these, especially the chance to design a fashion style for Zeal! The Queen should feel fashionable and evolved, Schala should pass as a potential party member and Janus shows some of that unrestrained magic potential.

So when it comes to #Magus and his redesign I've gone both ways. My initial idea is the one on the left. As the first major antagonist making him look more adult seem fitting, adding the demon horns seems like something he would do, its all a bit Marilyn Manson so this design is not gonna be for everybody. The 2nd design is a bit closer to the source, more magical, more mysterious, but also more busy
