I grew up in the #ChurchOfChrist. "Our God, He is Alive" functions as the closest thing the CoC has to a denominational Creed.

@mdmrn I grew up in the #ChurchOfChrist. It's a very decentralized denomination (even more so than SBC) and the theological spectrum on it is quite wide. The church I attended for 14 years in Dallas was pretty progressive on that spectrum. But, as I said, any specific congregation will only ever be as progressive as the most conservative Elder. We learned that Elder will never go away bc there is always another convective dude to take his place.

*A #denomination in their estimation is anything that is not #churchofchrist, the "one, true" #newtestament church in Acts 2 - these other people, though well-meaning, will go to hell, they say. They have a saying about people "sincerely believing but being sincerely wrong" that they think is beyond clever that is often stated as a reflex to the word or concept of "denomination."

Churches are legally allowed to discriminate when hiring clergy: people hired for specifically religious roles, like priests, pastors, rabbis, etc. The justification is that they should not have to hire people they would not considered qualified for religious reasons.
When drafting bylaws for the church that I pastor, I argued that for Christians, there is no religious justification for discrimination of any kind.

@eleanor I can't say I've seen the same in the Churches of Christ here in CA. There's not much interest in the liturgical calendar. But there has been an openness recently to new ideas and change that simply wasn't there before the pandemic. I heard a sermon last month where the preacher lamented how men in the churches do not let themselves be emotionally vulnerable and how emotional expression and vulnerability is so important in social groups like churches.

I see a lot of people using the hashtag #ProgressiveChristian and #ProgressiveChristianity but not the hashtags #Christian #Christianity, or vice versa. If you're using denominational hashtags, please use #Christian as well. I for one would like to hear the views of the entire church and it can be hard to track down hashtags for every denomination and right-left schism.
