Everyone has an ideal chronotype (the state where one’s sleep wake cycle is aligned with one’s biology). The trickiness lies in following this ideal state while tending to other priorities in life.

The best analogy for sleep schedule quality is L-bar metal. This distinct form is hard to mold into shape from a piece of wavey sheet metal. Though once in form it can withstand a lot of external force until the structure has collapsed.

Moving from one sleep schedule to another can be done systematically by slowly flattening out each L arm and then reshaping as desired. Or one can implode the structure creating a havoc mess, slowly trying remold it, but constantly being thrown into an uneven mess.

An interesting example is the jet lag weekend. During the workweek one follows one sleep schedule and as soon as Friday pulls up, one feels like one should treat oneself with longer wake hours and thereby indirectly giving oneself the permission to sleep in. This in return can create jet lag as soon as Monday pulls up and thereby putting the body in a state of stress for the next upcoming days.

A more permissive way to keep the treat behavior is to supplement the waking hours’ tiredness with either power naps or a full sleep cycle. This in return only works if one has the discipline to stop at the set time markers, otherwise one will be in a nice state of dismay.


On a personal example, I typically live on a circadian squared cycle, meaning every 3-4 weeks I naturally switch between a night owl to an early bird and vice versa.

I regularly use f.lux on Windows and Twilight on Android to filter out from my screen after sunset and protect my and sleep schedule.

I recently found a free package that does the same thing for called Redshift (github.com/jonls/redshift).

I strongly recommend trying these tools out.

Hab Vorgestern, nach einem Gespräch mit meiner Psychiaterin, herausgefunden, dass der unregelmäßige Schlafrhythmus den ich habe, als Nicht-24-Stunden-Schlaf-Wach-Störung oder auch „hypernykthemerales Syndrom“ bezeichnet wird.

In a nutshell: if mice exercise in the beginning of their activity phase (time of day) and before eating, the adipose tissue transcription response is prone to a more lipolytic activity - and timing is important here (not fasting). Form humans: do sports in the morning before breakfast to loose weight.

I haven't mentioned this before, but I have Delayed Phase Sleep Disorder. My circadian rhythm is out by several hours, which means instead of going to sleep at say 10.30pm, I don't go to sleep until close to 1am. This means I don't get the early morning light necessary for normal circadian function.
Next week I am starting a course of low dose melatonin to try and fix this.

Health has been a rollercoaster.

At one stage, I decided to experiment with a daily hour in daylight, at the balcony.

Turned out to be a successful experiment. Many symptoms were alleviated.

Some time later, I began to sit outdoors each night, like half an hour before sunset, until it became dark.

Turned out it makes me pleasantly sleepy. And I got an almost normal .

I feel relieved!

COVID replication in humans may follow a circadian rhythm and this may impact COVID test accuracy.

According to a recent study by McNaughton et al. published in the Journal of Biological Rhythms, 14:00 may be the best time to test for COVID and avoid a potential false negative result.
