Seven years into my study of Australian colonial artist S T Gill, I've been getting more frequent enquiries about works for sale. I'd responded up till now but now felt I needed to set a better boundary.

I'm a retired systems designer. My motivation for the Gill project is to contribute to knowledge commons and the public good – hence the near exclusive focus on works held by public collecting institutions. This keeps me busy enough. (Web site now updated to that effect.)

As it's the first day of the month, here's Gill's "August": coombe.id.au/S_T_Gill/S_T_Gill

Really enjoyed 'Creating user profiles based on citizen scientists' engagement patterns' presented by
Coen Van Galen and written with Thunnis van Oort, Montserrat Prats López, Ganzevoort Wessel, Rick Mourits. Loved their thoughtful attention to the language used to describe profiles of volunteer behaviour

It's reminded me that I've shared 'Summary results from a survey of contributors to Living with Machines Zooniverse crowdsourcing projects' that includes questions on volunteers using (or not) the project forum bl.iro.bl.uk/concern/datasets/

I've been reading of problems at Archives New Zealand through Vincent O'Malley (@vomalley Twitter). He recently reported "a member of the public, working unfunded in their spare time, has very quickly developed a much better search tool ... archway.howison.co.nz". It is neat, light, fast, and has an option to compare with the official search. I think Trove would benefit from a similar effort(s) using the API.

Here's an interesting example of historical mapping taking form - century old detailed maps of St Kilda streets and buildings from the Public Record Office Victoria (PROV) - digitised and overlayed on a modern map. It's early days - just put into a mosaic today. I think it'll benefit from cropping the map sheet images for a better overlap. (I georeference PROV maps as a volunteer. It can range in difficulty from the easy to a hard historical research task.)
