It is entirely possible for people to eat vastly less meat, and most communities did until only a few decades ago.
Maybe #CitizensAssemblies will want to reduce demand for meat, or increase ease of access to plant based food to free up huge areas of land.

And talking about #climateaction, a question came about #citizensassemblies. #RoryStewart replied they were great and did a better job than #Parliament, giving the example of #abortion legislation in Ireland. Would he be ready to actively support #directdemocracy and shoot himself in the foot? I think not.

One of Extinction Rebellion's demands of the UK government is to set up a citizen's assembly on climate change.

I'm a big fan of the idea of citizen's assemblies and think it reflects the ideals of democracy perfectly. Yet some are arguing that they are inherently anti-democratic.

What are your views on citizen's assemblies? Are they inherently democratic or anti-democratic, or is this scenario dependent?

Voting for politicians, many of whom have personal, not common good agendas, many of whom understand very little about sustainable development, isn't working to sustain #ecology

the benevolent dictator is a myth, they always get corrupted and rot, and then they die. AI one (as some suggest) is imo stupid, infantile fallacy, and the current so-called ais are trained by mostly Western data which is terribly narrow, biased and commercial.

another citizens' assembly, this time from Britain, which shows that ordinary people are more realistic than politicians (who are just representative dolls when the game gets tough).

the writer ponders "can we change", but i think that's the point: we need a cultural and legislational shift to sustainable societies, and it's a *good thing* that ppl see the need to regulate themselves.

Guardian's Sara Hudston was surprised to be randomly selected to apply for one to draft a UK's #PeoplesPlanforNature, launched yesterday, the only one with previous involvement with eco issues.

@lunch I'd heard Martin Wolf on https://www.ft.com/content/553055c9-3690-413c-be77-07746daa9fac (and read FT 21 Jan). IMHO his term 'demagoguery' is more accurate than 'populism', and there are relevant lessons to draw from Weimar Germany.

I feel Wolf contradictory says about (un)economic growth, acknowledging it has not benefited the working class, then his first big policy is 'do whatever we can to regain growth'. Among his list of external harms to UK he omits increasing energy EROEI. Interesting he likes #CitizensAssemblies.
