Completing the final steps of the Spanish citizenship journey for our family. I just sent off an email to the Consulate asking if we can complete the passport applications for the kids in Vancouver rather than flying to Toronto (this would be the 3rd time for me, 2nd for them!).

Tried writing it without a translator first to practive. Did OK but verbs and prepositions are hard to remember without more practice.

They seem to have updated/changed some of their application procedures over the past year so I'm hoping it's possible that they'll either allow us to apply for the passport at the Honourary Consulate in Vancouver, or when the Toronto Consul visits during the next year.

Still have that letter to the Spanish embassy waiting in my brain urging them to open a full Consulate in Alberta or BC. This flying to TO thing sucks.

As of today I've become a naturalized US citizen!

As part of the process I changed my surname from Salim to Lind, getting it closer to my ancestors' original 林 ( a lot of us Chinese-Indonesians were forced to change our surnames under the military dictatorship, see https://archive.is/339Nn ) so it feels like freedom in more ways than one.

Having lived here for less than a year and fighting #bureaucracy every step of the way, I'm wondering if #Germany, instead of being a destination, is just the #citizenship gateway to move somewhere else in the #EU.

What's sad is that moving farther to the #right will only make things worse. Aligning the #government with the needs of the people is the only solution, but voters are actively electing their own demise.
