I've gotten deeply into #UrbanPlanning in the last few years, abetted by a lifelong dream of living in #Europe. I discovered #Youtube channels like @nerd4cities, @notjustbikes, & #CityBeautiful that spelled out what makes places livable & why European #cities tend to be better.
It's changed my mind on where I'd like to live, from 'I want acres in the country' to wanting denser populations & walkability - & where city finances aren't held hostage by parking lots & roads.
This #video highlights some good & bad things about #Valencia, Spain (aka my hopeful retirement locale), but what shocked me was the 80% home ownership figure, vs 65% in the US. Americans like me tend to associate #apartments (aka #flats) with renting, but not in Europe.
There's a better way of living, and I'd like to experience it.

What's up with zoning in the US? Why do we do zoning and where did it come from? Does it still work for us today?

From the description:
"District heating is the process of heating buildings by capturing waste heat from a power plant through co-generation. That heat is transmitted via steam or hot water. Many cities in the world have used this system, and it's increasingly attractive when paired with low-carbon power sources. Is steam the technology of the future?"

Does your city have enough parks? How many parks are enough? What works best, balancing the needs of the residents with the needs of the city?

#CityBeautiful: "Even the most die-hard car people will agree that taking a train to the airport is a better experience than braving airport traffic . . .. As a result, many cities globally have trains to their airports. It's seen as a symbol of a prosperous, business-oriented metropolis."
Nashville is not one of those cities.
A train to BNA wouldn't just serve air travelers, but office parks and businesses and homes between BNA and downtown.
Or even a decent bus.
Does rail transport serve workers at the airport?

Do we need on-street parking? How will we park in the places we want to go? Do we need cars? (not actually answered in this video).
City Beautiful steps in this controversial topic and discusses the reason we have on-street parking and the strain it has on cities.
