Screenshot of a post with a photo below text. Photo shows a few mostly young and white people around a city intersection walking, kneeling by their dog, standing, etc (feels like a generated image).

Text reads: "Someone with a 1-hr car commute needs to earn 40% more to be as happy as someone with a short walk to work. On the other hand, if someone shifts from a long commute to a walk, their happiness increases as much as if they'd fallen in love."

@mbonsma @hannorein It's an absolute disgrace in any Canadian city, but for this to be the nation's capital makes it even worse. Also knowing that this could be solved if we actually charged the full cost of driving, rather than subsidizing it, and put that money towards alternatives

Our cities need urgently to stop thinking in terms of "complementarity" of transport modes, and start to HIERARCHIZE and PRIORITIZE them by favouring the most economical modes in terms of space, energy and pollution.

Suburban Sprawl costs 38% more public money upfront & 10% more ongoing public cost than compact infill growth, with only 1/10th the ongoing tax revenue, according to the Smart Growth America report discussed in this Bloomberg Citylab article.

is REALLY expensive for everyone.

Never forget, multimodal streets (aka “complete streets”) are simply more efficient, because they move, hold & serve more people within the same space. Whether you think streets are just for moving people, or are for a LOT more, they’re just better. Via @NACTO@twitter.com

“The kinds of figures we’re talking about—that would actually save public money, remember—are rounding errors in most transportation budgets. So cities are literally wasting public money by not investing in smart bike infrastructure.”
This is still a really important conversation, between @modacitylife & I. Give it a read.
