Record numbers of Sydneysiders are choosing to travel into the city on 2 wheels, with recorded bike trips in some locations up to 6 times higher than in 2010.

Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore attributed the increase to the expansion of cycling infrastructure throughout the city.

“Since 2007 we have built 25km of safe, separated cycleways including pop-ups, 60km of shared paths and 40km of other cycling infrastructure,” the Lord Mayor said.

It is disappointing that in 2023, when a major new transport infrastructure project is opened to the public, that there are severe accessibility deficiencies or oversights that will impact on many blind and vision impaired travellers. I dont know whether @transportNSW has consulted with groups like @visionaustralia or @GuideDogsAus or whoever, but clearly accessibility was not a priority. Huge new pedestrian corridors at Sydney Central Railway opened this week as a precursor to the new Metro. Tactuals are only in places. Corridors are 22 metres wide. No longways tactuals.only around the head of the escalators. So how are we supposed to find the escalators? Poor work from all involved. This is not the first time the primary body developing such sites has either ignored accessibility and only paid lip service to advice provided. Wynyard Railway station and Wynyard Walk are hopelessly marked. George St is a dangerous environment and many local intersections are now 100% level between footpath and road. It is time our agencies become more militant and confrontational with Government organisations and less cozy.

City of Sydney Council News: This World Bicycle Day we look in the archives to explore how Sydney developed a love for cycling from the 19th century onwards.

Sydney was an early pioneer in the world of cycling, with bicycles and velocipedes zooming along city streets as early as the 1860s.

SMH: School zones for childcare centres: Push to reduce speed limits in villages, inner city

@JessScully

> Former Sydney deputy lord mayor Jess Scully also wants the council to back a maximum speed limit of 40km/h on all roads in the Sydney CBD and inner-city suburbs, “with consideration to 30km/h in our villages, to support safety for people walking and cycling”.

My Place survey for people who live or work in Green Square, Alexandria, Beaconsfield, Erskineville.

If you live in these areas you should definitely do this. It matters to tell people you want

> The study aims to explore your experiences of, and desires for, your local area. Your information will help the City of Sydney project future service needs and provide better facilities.

It should take ~10 minutes to complete.

@JessScully just send out a newsletter for YIMBY Squad, covering 40kph zones, cycling infrastructure feedback, and electric vehicle charging.

This is the “view in browser” link from the Mailchimp newsletter (on the public mailing list of yimbysydney.com/) - hopefully it's alright to share.

More context on why the Greens member for Balmain opposed the continuous footpath crossings and footpath widening on St Johns Road, Glebe, Sydney: aus.social/@jakecoppinger/1099

I wrote to Jamie Parker (Greens Member for Balmain (State Gov)) and he assured me that Bill's disagreement with the proposal was that extended widening of the footpath would "reduce space available for existing cyclists and would also mitigate opportunities for dedicated cycleways in the future." (info shared with permission).

Jamie said he knew that the project would get support to proceed (as the required majority supported it) but still felt he needed to make a clear statement about cycling issues if they arise on the agenda in future.

He emphasized his representatives on the various committees he has a vote on are always focused on minimising car use, prioritising pedestrian and bike movements, with an objective to maximise active transport opportunities where ever they arise.

I'm appreciative of their quick and candid response! It's frustrating this context is not accessible from the meeting minutes.

Some outcomes from the City of Sydney Cycling and Traffic Calming Committee (it's a mouthful!) on the 16th of Feb:

- Contra-flow cycling will be newly legal & signposted on 158 one-way streets across the City of Sydney 🎉 meetings.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.

- The Representative for the Member for Balmain (held by Jamie Parker/Greens) voted against the installation of at least 8 continuous footpath crossings and footpath widening along St Johns Road, Glebe. One car park would be lost. meetings.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.

- Two electric parking spaces will be added on St Johns Road (Glebe), only permitting cars to be parked when they are charging: meetings.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.

- A kerb extension will be added on Marriott St (Redfern) just north of Cooper Street, which will create a safer pedestrian crossing: meetings.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.

If you have more context/thoughts on these I'm curious to hear.

The City of Sydney local pedestrian, cycling and traffic committee will vote on the 16th of February whether to make 158 one way streets legal for contraflow cycling (in the opposite direction of cars). This would provide a useful network of low traffic cycling routes complimentary to the necessary separated infrastructure.

The criteria for selecting the one way streets is:
- sight distance free of obstructions;
- traffic volumes and vehicles speeds are low; and
- road geometry does not present an unacceptable risk

759 submissions were received from 337 individuals and 4 community and bike user groups with 579 responses supporting the proposal, 18 providing neutral feedback and 172 opposing. See the comments and summaries at meetings.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.
