This is Vitré, where, built upon the very living rock the northern curtain wall displays a nice round tower of the 15th century, while beyond, a beaked tower, triangular and solid juts out. That is 16th century, from the time when it was realised that these new fangled 'gunnes' were becoming pretty effective and pointy towers to deflect the shot would probably be more effective than round towers, however thick their walls were.

On the northern wall of Vitré, a 13th century bretèche overlooks the valley of the river Vilaine. The rock outcrop on which the wall is built forms a drop of about 30m down to the river. (A bretèche was a means by which the garrison could watch/harass/shoot at/drop things on an attacking force at the foot of the wall. The could be roofed or open.)

Rennes, the Tour Duchesne. In 1143, the privilege of Papegaut was granted to Rennes by Duke François II. The papegaut is an annual shooting competition at a cardboard or wooden bird, first with a crossbow and then after 1605 with an arquebus. The winner is named "king of the Papegaut". A Papegaut was installed on the tower until 1680. The illustration shows the Papegaut at the tower in 1532.

Rennes, the Portes Mordelaises. Extensively rebuilt between 1442 and 1452, and with an artillery bastion added to the outside in the mid 1460s, this impressive tower has recently been excavated and restored. It is one of only two towers that survive from Rennes' medieval city walls.

When i walk the streets i always keep an eye to the walls. They reflect their society. Different neighborhoods, different walls, different people. Each wall has it own story to tell.

I look at them, i see myself, i see my country and its dirtiness.
