Listening to Morning Joe I had something of an epiphany. I've been decrying the state of American education for decades, but the reality that follows is that most Americans are now nitwits, literally "know nothings". Americans don't know anything about anything, not their own history, not science, not #civics, not #music, just sports, movies, motorized entertainment and celebrity sex. Full stop. The result of the destruction of public education is quasi universal ignorance.

🤔 My daily posts for the rest of this week suggest that social media algorithms have little impact on polarization, news discernment, trust in news, and similar outcomes. So this result may tell us more about we use social media than how social media impacts us.

A quick search turns up numerous reactionary training programs for right-wing activists but little that that is about actual liberty, rationality, democratic values, and similar.

The debt ceiling is a requirement of the US Constitution, so it’s pretty off the mark to compare the US against parliamentary systems that, firstly, are parliamentary systems, and secondly, aren’t subject to the US Constitution.

No, the debt ceiling isn’t literally the USA deciding to order but not pay. The US can, must, and will pay its debts regardless of the debt ceiling. Treasury takes in plenty of revenue to pay its debts regardless of the debt ceiling.

That’s a flat out false claim and we shouldn’t put up with it when politicians start going on about it.

No, the debt ceiling is merely an expression of the idea that the representative branch of the federal government gets final say over whether the whole country will obligate itself to paying back debts.

In #Deming and #LunaCounty, these two local governments have been struggling to find ways to allow public input without the meetings becoming a circus.

Public comments can sometimes bring a lot of entertainment and some spectacle to a dry municipal meeting, but they decided there needed to be limits.

@parker For any country that aspires for any sort of democratic engagement they absolutely have a say in, and it’s pretty darn important that they know what they are talking about if they are to exercise that say.

We live in a time when people ranging from politicians to TV hosts to social media influencers are vociferously making statements about government, but if the population doesn’t know how their government works then they are unprepared to either be one of those speakers or judge whether those speakers are telling them correct things.

That’s not to mention giving people the knowledge they need to protect themselves, whether it’s knowing whether a parking fine is valid or knowing the limits on how they can be approached by police.

#Civics is so important even practically in any governmental system that goes beyond just telling residents to shut up and let officials do whatever they want. Which is an option, but not one I would go for.
