Short summary: Paper starts with brief history of poppy's contested meaning, followed by pacifist critique of poppy narrative's internal #dissonances, its selective #memory, & its blinkered horizon of #compassion. Then reflects on political consequences for #military-#industrial-#entertainment complex, liberal institutionalist projects, & #veterans. Then reflects on poppy’s hegemonizing function in British #civilreligion, calling for commemorations to better accommodate deeper reflections on the causes of #war & #militarism (instead of remaining quietly compatible or even complicit).
