@stationkeeper @tristansnell if Rural whites still haven’t figured out they fought a civil war for the same contemptuous ruling class that kept them in poverty bc their slaves did all the work, they never will.

I recently got some very exciting digital images! This is The United States Primer, First Part by the American Tract Society in New York.
This book was created specifically to educate formerly enslaved Black Americans during the civil war. I’ve examined four copies of this book, but the back cover of this one is unique!

Mary Edwards Walker worked as a surgeon for the Union Army during the Civil War. She was captured by Confederates after crossing enemy lines to treat wounded civilians & arrested as a spy. She's the only woman to ever receive the Medal of Honor - pictured here, wearing it.

3/4 After the #CivilWar , the entire family went to #Brazil. There was a large movement of disenfranchised #Confederates who tried to start a colony there. Some stayed, and some (like my ancestors) eventually came back to the USA. The ones who stayed became known as #Confederados .
There is a diary by one of the teenage girls who went with the migrants, Julia Keyes. Her story is amazing in what she endured and how they built the settlement.
But it's also very sad, in that every mention of local Black people gives them no name, no personality. Whereas her white friends are named every time, and you get to know them. It showed me the mindset that allowed to #slavery-- Black people were just scenery, no more important than a horse pulling a cart.😥

1/4 Some years back, I was contacted by a man writing an article for a #Numismatics ( #coin and #PaperMoney collecting) magazine. The man had found my #FamilyTree online, and wanted to know if I had any photos for my ancestor, Capt. John Henry Freligh. (I didn't.)
He told me that my #ancestor had printed much of the #currency for the #Confederacy .
I knew Capt. Freligh had been a #steamboat Captain, and had published a newspaper for a short time. And family stories said he was friends with Conf.Pres. Jefferson Davis. I even knew that Capt. Freligh's wife was a spy for the South (smuggling information & medicine in the buttons of her dress, across enemy lines).
But I was surprised that out of all those stories, the one that had been lost in our #OralHistory was that he was entrusted with printing the paper money for the South! (He was half of "Freligh & Hutton" on the images below.)

Hey #histodons — happy to escape Twitter to join doom scrollers over here. Still searching for a sliver of optimism. I am a 19c historian of passed-over people, from ordinary sailors to Civil War civilians to women daredevils. Currently working on a YA story of two girls caught in the conflict of Gettysburg.
