For this to happen in any meaningful way, Mastodon needs more sophisticated and meaningful threading of discussions.

I used to use (and for a while worked for) the UK-based #CIX (Compulink Information eXchange). They had this many years ago. This enabled clients and addons to be developed which could mute an entire thread (discussion) or just a sub-thread, starting at a particular message.

It's St Patrick's Day so here is my favourite Patrick. The late, lamented, Mr McDonnell, loei@cix, erstwhile Earl of Antrim, in Queen Anne's withdrawing room at Avebury Manor - 10 years ago.

Time for a proper #introduction.

I am, like many others here, a refugee from other social media sites. In my case, it all started way back in 1990 when I did the #OU DT200 information technology course. This gave me access to their CoSy based conferencing system. From there I explored various #BBSs before joining #CIX. From there I migrated to #Facebook and #Twitter via #Usenet.

My posts are likely to cover a variety of areas such as: #Cats, #Photography, #Cooking and #Running.

I was on #CiX back then, and still use them for web hosting.

I remember the thrill of dialling in to a (fairly) locally BBS in the even when calls were cheaper.

Then a local text-only system called #CiX

After that it was #Compuserve , then the Internet itself.

It was fun back then, but that fun has disappeared.

#introduction I pre-date the internet, let alone the web. #TheWell, #CIX, #BIX, etc anyone? I'm now a UK civil servant responsible for a large amount of on-premise and cloud hosting. I've been a cloud evangelist, management consultant, IT director, project manager, photographer, amongst other things. Proud to be a #STEMAmbassador and #CodeClub helper teaching kids #python.
