Italy's clam industry under threat from blue crab 'invasion'

"Clam aquafarms in the delta of the Po river valley in northern Italy are particularly hard hit, with a local marine biologist telling Reuters that the crabs have eaten up to 90% of young clams, decimating future production."

Why do I seem to spend so much more time looking at recipes online & saving them to my phone than actually cooking them?! 🤦🏼‍♀️
This looks yummy though:

"[Dr Neo Mei Lin's] book – A Field Guide To Giant Clams Of The Indo-Pacific – cites a study published in 2022 which showed that species richness alone cannot account for the biodiversity contributions derived from the phylogenetics and ecological roles of the giant clam species."

Cool article on the work of Dr Neo Mei Lin. She's also written a book: "A Field Guide to the Giant Clams of the Indo-Pacific".🙂

"“Knowing that I helped these clams to grow in the lab and then return to the reefs is an astonishing experience for me,” says the 36-year-old senior research fellow at the National University of Singapore’s Tropical Marine Science Institute."

All of the rivers on the watershed feed into the Atlantic Ocean, and at that , 350 of plus , , and , rely on that water quality, which is now tainted with pollution and sediment. Plus harmfal algal blooms cause dead zones. Sigh.

Wood-eating clams use their poop to dominate their habitat

"Deep beneath the waves, tiny clams with shells usually about as big as a pea bore into pieces of sunken wood. The wood is food for them, as well as a home. These rare, scattered, sunken pieces of wood support miniature ecosystems where different wood-boring clam species can live in harmony for years. But researchers found that one group of wood-boring clams has evolved a unique way to get the wood all for itself: building chimneys made of poop".

Climate change is causing oceans to become more acidic, which can weaken the shells of shellfish. The issue has researchers investigating Indigenous sea gardening techniques as a way of mitigating the impacts on clams and other wildlife. Great to see marine ecologist Leah Bendell working on this with stewards from the Tsleil Waututh Nation. hakaimagazine.com/news/clamshe
