A Precept

With words of ivory,
Of bronze, of ebony,
Of alabaster, marble, steel and gold,
The beauty of the visible is told.

But how with these express
The unseen loveliness -
Splendor and light, and harmony, and sound,
The heart hath felt, the sense hath never found?

No shining words of stone -
Shadow and cloud alone -
These shall the poet seek eternally,
Whose lines would carve the mask of Mystery.

- Clark Ashton Smith, 1922

Clark's head wasn't always in the clouds:

Thy body is a secret Eden
Fed with Lethean springs,
And the touch of thy flesh is like to the savor of lotos.
In thy hair is a perfume of ecstasy,
And a perfume of sleep;
Between thy thighs is a valley of delight,
And a valley of peace.

Latest read, Mother of Toads (1937) & Phoenix (1954) by Clark Ashton Smith, from Dark Eidolon and Other Fantasies; a dark comedy, the Mother of Toads, a grotesque bloated witch, enchants a lover but is spurned when he sees her for what she is.
And, in Phoenix, voyagers from a frozen earth seek to reignite a dying sun.

Just read ‘The Seven Geases’ by Clark Ashton Smith, 1934. Full on fantasy, all jerkins and halberds, in which an arrogant hunter is compelled to descend into a mountain offering himself as a sacrifice to one god after another.

Any weird fiction fans here? I'm talking about the real stuff, from Weird Tales of the 1920s/30s.

I got into the genre in the usual way, through Lovecraft. And in the usual way I started exploring work of various writers in his circle, and the work of writers whom Lovecraft admired.

Hashtags for some of the weird fiction writers I like:

Hugo Gernsback was one of the founding figures of pulp science fiction - he was also Jewish. That made him a target for antisemitic comments by Lovecraft and his peers such as Clark Ashton Smith.

Language warning.

The Sapphire Goddess collects all of Nictzin Dyalhis’s stories that appeared in Weird Tales from 1925 to 1940.

His best stories are stories of love and revenge, erotically charged and with just a dash of the decadence of Clark Ashton Smith.

Very much worth reading.
