Cleopatra VII has a hold in the imagination that has continued for millennia. Here she is imagined in the moments prior to her suicide. In this act, Cleopatra defied Rome and ensured Augustus would not parade a pharaoh in his triumph…

If the reception of the ancient world on film appeals to you – then we have a treat coming your way soon.

We just recorded an episode with the very erudite Professor Alastair Blanchard on the subject of Disney’s Hercules 🥳

Hercules and the Stymphalian Birds (c 1872) ~ Gustave Moreau

The sixth labour of Hercules was to rid Lake Stymphalia of the bronze-beaked birds that had a taste for human flesh…

With Athena’s help, the birds were scared to flight making them easy pickings.

Hercules appears here in almost complete ‘heroic nude’ - a mode of undress that seemed fitting for the physical idealisation of the divine and semi-divine in ancient Greek thought. Over time this idea would translate to powerful political figures such as Roman emperors who’d made a visual allusion to the gods through their nudity in sculpture. For artists of the nineteenth century, nudity through classical allusion permitted a showcasing of the body in public that might otherwise have been considered scandalous…

Just as with Roman Republican Generals, there is a lot of vowing to build temples if granted victory in the history of the House of Savoy... Victor Amadeus II succeeded, and is buried in the resulting basilica.

The foundation of Rome comes with many stories including a long generational saga connected to Aeneas in the aftermath of the Trojan war. But perhaps the most famous and fearful tale is one of fratricide involving the twins Romulus and Remus.

Before Romulus and Remus really got famous, they were just forest kids being raised by a she-wolf.

We salute the she-wolf for doing her best with some energetic youngsters! It’s a tough gig to take on. This illustration captures the vibe perfectly.

The audience was a bit sparse because of the weather, but the show went very well. Here’s E1’s synopsis of the play, and his writer/director’s note. Definitely — thanks to YouTube & @HistoriaCivilis@twitter.com for the inspiration, I gather.

Do you know modern plays based on Ancient Greek/Roman theatre that deal at any level with the history of black diaspora and/or are set in colonial or post-colonial contexts?

I've been writing about Pecong, by Steve Carter, a play based on Medea which is set in the Caribbean and has many Afro-Caribbean elements such as music, religion and society. Since then I've been interested in other plays that deal with similar questions, such as "The Darker Face of the Earth", by Rita Dove, "Odale's Choice", by Kamau Brathwaite, and "The Bacchae of Euripides: A Communion Rite", by Wole Soyinka.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
