Torch Singer (1933), a pre-code melodrama. A singing star searches for her lost daughter. A bit sentimental for my tastes but Claudette Colbert makes anything worth seeing (and she wears some stunning gowns). In its own way it's quite pre-code.

In the 1930s Claudette Colbert observed that censorship drove performers to extremes, recalling that in one wild love scene, she and her co-star were only permitted to put their heads together while their legs stretched in opposite directions. She admitted, âIt was hard to be convincing.â

At the age of forty-two, Claudette Colbert wanted more control over her career, and to spend more time with her husband, Dr Joel Pressman, so she went freelance. She said, âI had long wanted to be free of contractual obligations and restrictions, so that I could choose vehicles best suited to me.â

In 1935, a very busy year for Claudette Colbert, she made one of her most interesting films, Private Worlds, a story about the staff and patients of a psychiatric hospital. Cinematographer Leon Shamrov used early zoom lenses to create special effects for this film. However, maybe the subject matter was too challenging for movie audiences at the time because Private Worlds lost $10,000 at the box office.

In 1935 Claudette divorced Norman Foster and married Dr Joel Pressman. They remained married until his death in 1968. Claudette said of Pressman, âJoel was perhaps the most emotionally mature man I had ever met. I felt that I could trust him, completely and permanently.â

Claudette and Norman Foster lived apart for most of their seven year marriage, so it came as no surprise when it fizzled to divorce. Professionally, through movies like Imitation of Life and The Gilded Lily, Claudette established herself as one of Hollywoodâs leading actresses and, as her Bel Air home demonstrates, reaped the rewards.

Claudetteâs career received another boost with It Happened One Night, a movie that set the stage for a series of screwball comedies. Constance Bennett and Miriam Hopkins rejected the lead role because they thought it was too silly. Claudette accepted the part because she want to act alongside Clark Gable.

Q + A with Helen Hover
Do you allow yourself to be photographed in bathing suits?
No. I think it is undignified, unless a scene in a picture calls for it. I think itâs fine for the newer crop of starlets, but not for me, thank you.
Are you a good housekeeper?
You bet! I proudly admit that I can cook, sew, wash and iron.

Thanks to The Sign of the Cross, Claudette became the latest âsex goddessâ of the silver screen. Being a private person, I sense that she was never happy wearing that mantel. Bland Johaneson of the New York Mirror wrote: âHer naked lust for March burns up the screen.â

While filming Sign of the Cross, for three days Claudette had to bathe in asses milk. Of course, the producers didnât use asses milk. Instead they used powdered milk, which by the third day stank to high heaven. The glamour of Hollywood.

Between 1929 and 1932, Claudette made fourteen movies. Although she received excellent reviews many of these pictures were mediocre, suffering from poor scripts or struggling to make the technical adjustments required to move from the silent era to the talkies.
