I agree that Mastodon is an excellent way to change how people use social media to connect.

The difference is - and I’ve had this conversation with a lot of other long-time Mastodon users - Mastodon is not about broadcasting or reach. This makes it wonderful for conversations like the one we’re having here.

On the other hand, it makes it terrible for - and was specifically designed to prevent - the way people traditionally use social media - bringing us back to the OP question which was “how do we protect @donorschoose and #clearthelist”

Both of those relied on “reach” to be effective.

Within Mastodon, the only way I can think of to do something like that would be to coordinate large numbers of users, on the same day, throughout the day, to post or boost posts regularly throughout the day.

Again, by design, Mastodon doesn’t broadcast for reach, so if you don’t coordinate large numbers of users all at once across multiple servers, at a grassroots outreach level, you won’t be able to easily promote a movement. You don’t have an algorithm to “game.”

The other option is to try to game different algorithms, like Instagram. Figure out where the people most likely to support #clearthelist would be, figure out how that algorithm works, and focus on that platform.

I like Mastodon precisely because you can’t have “influencers” in the same way. There’s an equalizing effect, regardless of how many followers someone has. For large scale movements that require cooperation and planning, you can use hashtags but you’re not going to get the same level of fast awareness here.

What I have been seeing on Mastodon are conversations within a social group or instance that discuss and/or respond to topics. This is where coordination across individual users *could* work. However, it needs to be planned (see above) for it to gain cross-instance visibility.

Really big question... How do we protect the teachers of #teachertwitter?
