The US has set a record for the most natural disasters in a single year that have cost $1bn or more, as fires, floods and ferocious winds were among deadly events experts warn are being turbo-charged by the climate crisis.

There have already been 23 extreme weather events in the US this year that have cost at least $1bn.

"Climate breakdown has begun" as Phoenix breaks another heat record

Story by Andrei Ionescu, September 11, 2023

"According to the National Weather Service (NWS), on Saturday, September 9, the temperatures in Phoenix, Arizona set a new heat record, continuing to rise as the city broke its previous record of the most days at or above 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 Celsius).

New record

"This was the 54th day this year that the temperatures in Phoenix surpassed 110F – one day more that the record of 53 days set in 2020. Moreover, the daily average temperature of 97F (36.1C) in June, July, and August surpassed the previous record of 96.7 (35.9) set three years ago.

"As the weekend highs were expected to range between 108F and 114F (with night temperatures between 80F and 88F), NWS issued an excessive heat warning until 8pm on Sunday.

Anthropogenic climate change

"The scientists blame anthropogenic climate change correlated to the advent of El Nino (a temporary warming of parts of the Pacific Ocean impacting weather all over the globe). However, since this natural phenomenon is expected to peak at the beginning of next year, 2024 will most likely break all the records set this year.

"'The dog days of summer are not just barking, they are biting,' warned United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. "Climate breakdown has begun.'"

Climate breakdown
“There’s a clear message for Australia – we must phase out fossil fuels.”
"Australia, is still approving new coal mines and gas exploration. Carbon emissions? Still climbing... Governments worldwide are failing to cut global greenhouse emissions rapidly enough to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees and avoid catastrophic climate change and there is a rapidly narrowing window to act."

“If Cop28 fails to deliver a clear roadmap for a rapid and equitable phase out of all fossil fuels, the advent of the renewable energy era, and adequate finance to the most vulnerable countries, it will be an utter failure.”

More and more scientists are willing to risk arrest, and their reputations, because of alarm over the climate emergency.

“The thing that’s stopping a lot of more scientists from doing this kind of activism is that it’s scary. It’s socially scary, you risk your job, you risk your status among your colleagues, you risk criminal charges. But I know just from having beers with other scientists, that as a community, we’re pretty terrified by our own science.”

I’m not exaggerating when I say if we don’t stop this rampant approval of fossil fuel projects, by 2073 we’ll be living through the large-scale destruction of ecosystems and will have breached multiple tipping points, leading to the collapse of our food systems and hellish heat and fires.

Everlasting snow melting once is weather. If it melts fully in 5 of 7 years since 2017, that is climate change.

40 years ago, in August of 1983, I went tobogganing in the Cairngorms. Whilst whizzing down the slope, it was cold enough for sleet to fall. This is something today's teenagers will not be able to experience.

Burning fossil fuels is heating the planet. But if we quit our fossil fuel habit and stop emitting greenhouse gases... what happens then? Answers seem to vary from "global warming will stop" to "we can expect more and more climate change to come". So which is right? And what would it really take to stop climate change and protect ourselves as much as possible?

Africa is witnessing climate extremes. In recent years, southern African countries such as Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe have been hit by deadly cyclones, western African nations such as Nigeria have endured devastating floods and the horn of Africa has grappled with a prolonged drought that has left millions facing food insecurity. All these extreme weather events, experts say, have been made several times more likely by climate change.

Heatwaves across the world are worsening air quality and pollution, scientists have said.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has said extreme temperatures are not the only hazard from heatwaves but that they also cause pollution-related health problems.

In their annual air quality and climate bulletin, the meteorologists have highlighted a “vicious cycle” of climate breakdown and air pollution.
