XR Nijmegen has protested yesterday at the citiy council meeting against plans to grant energy firm ENGIE to construct a new gas power plant at the outskirts of the city. ENGIE says the plant will be powered with so called green hydrogen.
While green hydrogen is a highly inefficient energy storage medium as such, the power plant can be used with fossil gas (often euphemistically called 'natural' gas) as well. Activists fear that this a greenwashing scheme of ENGIE that allows to construct yet new fossil fuelled infrastructure in the midst of the looming #climatecatastophy.

"Exxon's net income more than doubled from a year earlier to $11.4 billion, the highest first-quarter profit in the oil giant’s 140-year history. I don't know. I know that a lot of people post on social media that "anti-capitalism is the ONLY solution to our #ClimateCris". I just haven't seen any evidence-based descriptions supporting the hypothesis so I think that it just contributes to delaying #ClimateAction is why I try to counter that narrative what little I can.

I appreciate this conversation and we can keep it in mind and revisit it after giving it some thought sometime hopefully.

When thinking about #consum and #climatecris: what about coffee, tea and cocoa? I guess most of the people who drink this stuff are not living where it's cultivated. Despite the fact that people are drinking it in huge amounts these are luxury goods, aren't they? It would be interesting to know the real price for a cup of coffee if you take the effects on the climate into account.
