Even though I say I'm not specialist generating synthetic rain data, it looks like I am going to have to delve into it, or just leave that part of my PhD alone. The data provided to me correlates poorly to observed data... Pearson correlation factor (r) of 0.30. I can't use it unless I note my reservations about it. The thing is, I know how to fix it. But it's not my wheelhouse, it's someone elses #climateData
Comparing synthetic rain data with observed data for Perth today. I'm not an expert at synthesising data, so I have partnered with an industry specialist who makes this data. However, I am expert at assessing the quality of climate data for hygrothermal simulation. Win-win for both of us - I will publish this so they'll get validation and I get synthetic data for all the missing data months. #climateData #work #buildingScience #Python

The climate data of 2023 is for sure going off the charts. It is such a sad state of the world that the question of climate isnt higher up on the agenda.

Now that I've done my "brainless busy work" for today. Now I'm onto collating climate data ready to do QA next week. Perth first! #work #ClimateData
We need annual updates on the key climate indicators in this critical decade! Congratulations to the authors on this important work.
2nd warmest May - following
4th warmest April and
2nd warmest March
Globally since 1950.
The #C3S monthly Climate Bulletin is out now:
📈 #Antarctic sea ice extent reached a record low monthly value at 17% below average;
📈 Conditions were drier-than-average in the Iberian Peninsula.

Today, we released our new #SeaIce concentration #ClimateData record for #ESA Climate Change Initiative 🎉
It is a 30-years (1991-2020) dataset of global sea ice at 12.5 km grid spacing (our #OSISAF data is 40+ years but 25 km grid spacing).
ESA wrote a piece about it with a visualization of the improved resolution:

Access the data here:

I'll be presenting this at the #IGS Sea Ice Symposium in Bremerhaven soon, see you there?

Attending the #QGreenland #QGIS user workshop in CPH today, I learn that in the US it is the federal year of #OpenScience.
#FAIRdata is the future and something I'm pushing hard on at DMI too - we already have #FrieData, time to make our #ClimateData #FAIR too.

Some weird stuff happening with ENSO indices. OLR (Outgoing Longwave Radiation) measures the reflected radiation around the equator in the Pacific, anomalies are use to indicate the El Niño cycle we are in. This quarter it's been giving some strong indications of La Niña... when all the other indices show us moving into neutral or El Niño. What's the bet it's because the sea has heated up so much and now doesn't absorb as much radiation? #ClimateChange #ClimateData
Well, I just got jolted out of "no work" mode. Got a phone call and it's set me onto a weekend of data _mangling_ (hello Python) Comparing hourly synthetic rain vs observations for #Hobart. Nature abhors a vacuum, something something.... #ClimateData #python
Back at work after a holiday Monday. I feel _productive_ I wrote all morning, I'm writing a paper about southern hemisphere climate change vulnerabilities and mould in buildings. Now onto hygrothermal simulations for my current research project #BuildingPhysics #ClimateData

# My PhD summary (updated):
In the southern hemisphere, the climate varies wildly year to year. Average climate data cannot represent the Australian climate. My research is to find a way to represent our unique climate in climate data which are used in Australian energy efficiency and hygrothermal building performance simulations. The method can be applied when the climate becomes unstable due to #ClimateChange #PhDlife #AcademicChatter #ClimateData #DataScience #STEMinist

Meet #CHELSA @EnvidatService @DirkNKarger! It provides global #climatedata on a very high spatial and temporal resolution for the past, present & future. It is the only data set that can provide these resolutions and is highly used across many disciplines. https://www.envidat.ch/#/metadata/chelsa-climatologies
Europe saw 3rd warmest January on record.
Antarctic sea ice extent reached its lowest for January.
New Year's Day saw record temperatures in Europe with 0.6°C higher than any previous daily January value in the full #ERA5 data record back to 1940.
