Hope you're all following @mollyquell, especially this week for subscribers to #ClimateDiary - who knew live coverage of international court cases could be so entertaining *and* informative?
@Sustainable2050 hottest September *ever* in the UK. Following no rain in West Wales in May & June, then rain throughout July & August.
Not a great surprise, but still jarring to see: for all land areas north of 60°N, this summer (June- August) had the highest average temperature in the ERA5 database, and in all likelihood the highest in centuries. Combined land & seas north of 60°N summer 2023 effectively tied with 2016 for the warmest. The trend is remarkable: each summer since 2019 has been warmer than any summer was before 2012. #Arctic #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateDiary

A story about chess as a metaphor about society
I used to casually play chess with people as a way to interact socially. Not all the time, just like someone might pull out some playing cards and say "hey let's play Go Fish" or whatever. It was usually a pretty even match with neither side being Super Into Chess. Sometimes I'd get to the point in the game where they had taken everything but the king. They would tell me to give up.

An unusually hot day in the #UK. Although temperatures have been this high, at this time of year, in the UK, in the past, these unusual weather events will become more frequent
Also, at certain times of the year, the highest daily temperatures are the hottest since records began
The British, on average, like their hot weather. That's why many of them fly to destinations with hotter climates
I wonder how their preference for hot weather colours their opinions on #ClimateChange?

France - Heatwave - September!!
Never seen before. A heatwave (Canicule) outside the summer months. This is a first, since records began.
Temperatures may reach 37°c today, in the Loire Valley. In SE Normandie, we're looking at ~35°c.

It's September and my valiant #BlueElderberry is still trying to set fruit. It has been trying since spring without much success. #CaliforniaNativePlant #ClimateDiary

Cognitive dissonance moment today, talking to someone I know about their work.
They are flying to Germany (from the UK) for a trade event, should be great etc
Next sentence started about the importance of sustainability and the things they are doing to reduce CO2 emissions from their equipment (by capturing it) and how they didn’t want it to be only about PR but embedded in the company.
I just couldn’t.

#climatediary The Sphinx snow patch in the Scottish Highlands, used to be present all year round. Today it has disappeared. This has happened 10 times before, and five of those have been since 2017. Photos: Iain Cameron and Joe Glennie.
The #compost pile is not a waste to be managed. You mix carbon, nitrogen, air, and water.
You produce a fertilizer that has a high-carbon value that you will put back into the soil.
You are a carbon farmer on a mission for a #climateaction.
It is very very very valuable to compost.

OK, so today I participated in a webinar about #sustainability and #craft Theoretically, it was about craft practices and how to make making 'green'. Practically, it was a self-help pitch for selling sustainability training & certification for only £97/month but hey 10% is donated to environmental organisation (no mention who).
It's been the first time I really listened to someone taking the entire self-help BS and reframing it for 'sustainability'.
Long rant coming soon

The National Hurricane Center has issued their most aggressive intensity forecast ever for a newly-formed tropical depression: a Category 4 hurricane with 140 mph winds in five days.
Anyone else feels like we need to delete the label 'carbon-neutral' from any sustainability vocabulary because, well, it's an enormous, gigantic lie whose only purpose is to shield business-as-usual and to make individuals feel good without them having to engage in any meaningful substancial change?
Summer 2023 is in the books and it was an eventful one for #Alaska. Highlights included the seemingly ceaseless clouds and rain in Southcentral and southwest, several long term climate sites having the warmest summer on record (Utqiaġvik, Eagle, Northway), the most intense lightning day in 4 years and the #ClimateChange driven severe glacier dam outburst flooding on the Medenhall River near Juneau. #akwx #Arctic #Climate #ClimateDiary

It is a cold, wet day in LA today. It is normally hot & dry until October. At least the rain will help suppress fire season until next year. #ClimateDiary
#climatechangegardening #climatechangegarden #ClimateDiary In zone 6a. This year has been tough on the garden. Spring heat while peaches were in bud, 87°F, left 3 tree with only 4 flowers between them. Miraculously 2 peaches grew. The summer has been massive amounts of rain and humidity. Blueberries and pears love it but nearly everything else has rotted. Overrun with voles and squirrels last year. This year only a couple squirrels but more rabbits. Also pines have tons of pine cones.
